Did I Mention How Much I Love Flying?
By Paul Wein
Right now, I am staring out the window of a United Airlines Jet somewhere over a city that looks like a patchwork quilt of activity far beneath my feet – because I am high above the clouds. Did I mention how much I love flying?
To me, flying in a plane is the greatest feeling in the world. To sit in an aircraft that is safely placed on the ground and then hear the engines whirl as the speed increases until you are lifted off the ground is truly an exhilarating experience. To view the world get smaller and smaller underneath you is also an amazing site to behold. Almost instantly, neighborhoods become the size of your hand, swimming pools become raindrops, baseball diamonds look the size of real diamonds – and the entire world becomes a connected maze of existence thousands of feet beneath you.
Each and every time I fly – I get as giddy and excited as I did the first time I took off. And the funny thing is, I always book connecting flights – just so I can experience the thrill of taking off and landing more then once. I know that most people just want to get where they are going, but I find the trip to my destination one of the most exciting parts of my vacation. To be able to view the world you live in from so far above it is such a thrill. I feel as if I could grab a handful o houses, or set foot on a shopping mall – or use a mountain as a stepstool. From up here – the world is an entirely different place.
Even now as I gaze out my window, I see an entire world existing beneath me as I quietly fly above them – secretly watching cars travel to their destinations, people pull into lots and do their business – and entire cities go about their day’s chores – while I fly to my next destination.
We have begun our decent into Dulles Airport in Washington already, which means that in less then one hour – I connect to my next flight and get to do this all over again.
