A Penny For My Thoughts

A Job, A Vacation, A Road Trip – And A Necessity

By Paul Wein

Since September 11th, I have lived the horrific attack of that fateful day almost daily. I worked at OEM from September 18th to December 31st, I have taken countless trips to the site – and I am even being re-deployed to OEM on Monday for the six month anniversary of the atrocity. So if there is one thing I could use, it’s a vacation. And thanks to Ring Fever, I am getting that next week – when I head to Toronto, Ontario Canada for Wrestlemania X8.

To be honest, while I am ecstatic about being able to see The Rock wrestle Hulk Hogan live – it is not the wrestling aspect of this trip that is the most enticing – it’s the fact that I am getting away from New York City for a little while. There are times in my life where I have needed a vacation and longed to get away from it all – but now could not be more of a better time. With the six month anniversary of the World Trade Center attacks two days away – I have longed for an opportunity to go somewhere that does not require me to wear my badge around my neck due to all the security checkpoints, somewhere that does not have the words “Ground Zero” as one of it’s locations – and somewhere that is not torn apart by destruction and incalculable loss.

Granted, we are only going for a weekend – but that is all I will need. Just to be able to get in a van and drive to another country is great in itself – but then to attend WWF Fan Axxess followed by the greatest WWF pay-per-view event of the year is going to be a wonderful experience – and one that I can’t wait to begin.

I remember going on a road trip with Brian to Atlantic Beach, North Carolina in the summer of 1998. We had so much fun both on the trip and on the road – and now we get to do that again – but this time with Chris and Christine along for the ride.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s not that I don’t love New York, it’s just that I have been through so much disaster and seen so much tragedy in the last six months. From that infamous day, to the horrors I saw in the days following the attacks – to the unspeakable things I witnessed the day Flight 587 crashed – I could sure use a distraction from this now much changed world – even if only for a little while.

So with just six more days until I once again hit the road – I am looking forward to going away – now more then ever.

and turn it into love.
Ain’t nobody gonna tell us what we gonna do.
Because today, it’s up to you.
Temptation comin’ up to me.
A little relaxation and I’ll be great to be.”
