A Penny For My Thoughts

Happy New Year, Happy New Job

By Paul Wein

As I was sitting at the OEM Command Center on New Year’s Eve, I was doing what I always do when the amount of time left in a year is down to just a few hours – thank God for the year that just passed – and pray that the year to come will be happy, positive – and successful. As I was having these thoughts about what was to come in 2002, my phone rang and it was Allan at the Taxi and Limousine Commission – telling me that the first working day of 2002 would be my first working day at TLC.

Apparently, the job that I was scheduled to begin on October 1, 2001 that was put on hold due to the September 11th tragedy went through – and my first day at TLC would be the second day of the year. When I heard this news, I was ecstatic, sad – and afraid. I was ecstatic that the job finally went through – because having been months since my scheduled start date – I was concerned that TLC would change their minds about wanting to hire me. I was sad because while I was looking forward to working at TLC, I was going to miss everyone at OEM – and I was scared because I would now have to start a new year and a new career at the same time.

I find it very ironic that my new job began on the very first working day of the New Year. To me, that sends a message that this year will be one of new beginnings, different life paths – and positive changes.

I am into my third week here at TLC and I must tell you that this has been the most positive career change I have ever made. The staff here at TLC is wonderful, respectful – and friendly, the job is challenging by enjoyable – and Allan is an absolute joy to work for. Although I have only been here for less then a month – I feel as acclimated as if I was here for years – and I look forward to coming to work now more then ever.

Happy New Year indeed.

Got a good job, got a good office.
Got a new wife, got a new life.
And the family's fine”
