A Penny For My Thoughts

Gimmie A Break

By Paul Wein

It seems that whenever there is a disaster in this world – there are people willing to make a joke out of it. And considering the fact that September 11th was the worst day in American history – it was only a matter of time before someone with a sick and twisted sense of humor pounced on the tragedy and tried to make a joke out of it.

The first one of these sickos sent out a picture all over the Internet that was supposedly taken by a tourist just seconds before the first plane hit the Twin Towers. The picture was allegedly recovered during the rescue operation and the roll of film was developed to find a man standing on the Observation Deck of Tower #1 posing for a picture – with an American Airlines plane behind him just moments away from crashing into the Tower.

It is so obvious that this picture is a fake that I should not even waste my time discounting it – but I will anyway. First of all, I have been to Ground Zero and seen the devastation first hand, and I can tell you that no camera would have survived a fall from one hundred and ten stories. Second of all, the man in the photo is wearing a winter jacket and a ski cap. On September 11th – the weather was exceptionally warm that day – hardly weather for a heavy jacket and hat. Also, the entire picture is blurry – with the exception of the plane and the date stamp on the photo – which are both crystal clear – indicating that they were digitally added to the picture of the man – who obviously has way too much time on his hands – and a sick sense of humor.

Another sick weirdo has sent pictures of the exploding towers all over the web with a portion of the smoke and flames circled – because he believes that the Devil’s face can be seen emerging from the smoke.

I have heard some sick things in my life – but this one has to take the cake. Granted, the September 11th attacks were the most evil thing to ever happen in this country – but I doubt that the Devil’s face emerged from the flaming towers. Lights and shadows can play some really sick tricks on you – especially with explosions that large – which is precisely what those “faces” are – simply light and shadows.

So while everyone can use a good laugh – try and remember that some things are not funny – and should not be made into a joke.
