A Penny For My Thoughts

Bloomberg And OEM Are In, Which Means That I Am Too

By Paul Wein

Last night, New York City held it’s Mayoral elections – and for the first time since 1993 – the winner was not Rudolph W. Giuliani – and thank God it wasn’t Mark Green – it was Michael Bloomberg. The self-made billionaire businessman and head of Bloomberg News beat Democrat Mark Green by an extremely narrow margin to become New York City’s one hundred and eighth Mayor of the City of New York – and my new boss.

To be honest, I am so happy that Michael Bloomberg is the new Mayor and Mark Green is not. I never liked Mark Green and found him to be a useless, negative and annoying member of the Administration. But besides how I feel about him personally – I know that if Mark Green was elected Mayor – he would have returned this City to the way it was before Mayor Giuliani took office – rundown, crime ridden, and jobless. But with Mike Bloomberg as Mayor, the goals and ideas that Mayor Giuliani had planned for this City will continue – and so will I.

It’s no secret that when someone new takes over a political office – they bring in their own people and get rid of the people that worked under the previous Mayor. When Mike Bloomberg takes the reigns of this City, he will no doubt do just that – but because of his close relationship with our Administration – he will leave many of the key players in place. But if Mark Green became Mayor – I can assure you that even the guy that cleans the toilets at City Hall would have had to look for another job – and I probably would have had to as well.

The other good news that came out of last night’s election was that the Mayor’s Office of Emergency Management, which was not an official agency when it was created in 1996 because it has to be voted on to the Charter – was on yesterday’s ballot – and was passed by a whopping sixty-seven percent of the vote yesterday – making The Mayor’s Office of Emergency Management an official agency – which will now be called The Department of Emergency Management. That is also good news for me as I am working at OEM now and will be doing that until the end of the year.

The only sad thing that has come out of this election is that Rudy Giuliani will be leaving office on January 1, 2002. I have to tell you that as someone who covered his 1989, 1993 and 1997 campaigns – and as someone who has been his Press Secretary for the last three years – I will miss him terribly. What Rudy Giuliani has done for this City in the last eight years as its Mayor is unmatchable by any past Mayor – and will never be accomplished by any other Mayor of the City of New York. So while I am very much looking forward to working under Mayor Bloomberg – it is with a heavy heart that I must say goodbye to Mayor Giuliani.

So I can proudly say that yesterday’s election was a good one – especially because Mark green didn’t win.
