A Penny For My Thoughts

For The First Time Since 1964, It All Comes Down To Tonight

By Paul Wein

There are some very rare occasions in the game of baseball that make it's fans bite their nails, cover their eyes - and sit right on the edge of their seat. And while these occasions are rare -- this year's World Series can definitely be classified as one of those rare moments.

After six grueling and seesaw battles between the Arizona Diamondbacks and the New York Yankees -- they will meet tonight for Game Seven of the World Series -- with either team walking away with all the marbles -- and the World Series Championship.

This is the first time since 1964 that a team has forced the Yankees into a Game Seven of the World Series -- and the first team in my memory that has given the Yankees such a run for their money. In the last four World Series in 1996, 1998, 1999 and the Subway Series of 2000, the Yankees seemed to win without a fight -- either winning it in five -- or sweeping in four -- not this time.

This time, I have to confess that the Arizona Diamondbacks, despite being a five-year-old team -- has been the Yankees most formidable opponent that I have ever seen them face. From their pitching, to their outfield -- to their own power hitters -- this has not been an easy Series. And while the Yankees went from a two-game deficit to take a three game to two game lead -- the Diamondbacks came back very strong last night with an unbelievable fifteen to two victory over the Bronx Bombers -- forcing them into a Game Seven for the first time in thirty-seven years.

This is not the first time the Yankees have been one win away from the World Series Championship -- but it is the first time that I am worried. I have seen the Yankees in worse predicaments then they are in tonight, but not against a team of this caliber. The Diamondbacks, although still an infant in the world of baseball -- have proven themselves to be quite a match against the most winningest team in baseball -- all the way to the last possible game.

I will no doubt be sitting in front of my television tonight cheering my home team to victory along with all of my friends, I just hope that our cheers and prayers do not go unanswered. C'mon Yanks -- do it for me -- do it for New York -- and do it for Doug.
