A Penny For My Thoughts

Looking Toward The Uncertain Future

By Paul Wein

For the first time in the 21st Century, but not the first time in my lifetime – we are at war. And as our troops defend our great nation thousands of miles from home and us as Americans brace as the dirtbag Taliban threaten more attacks on American soil – I wonder about our future.

This war is unlike any war we have ever fought before for two reasons. For one thing, we are not fighting a particular country – but a band of terrorists that span across the globe – including here in America. Also, those we are fighting in this war are more lethal than any other opposition we have ever faced – because they have no regard for their own lives. While our military may strike with deadly force killing those we target – our military does not strap bombs to their bodies or fly their planes into buildings – but the Taliban and it’s cronies do – and that makes for a very frightening enemy.

And now, as we are in the middle of the first wave of Operation Enduring Freedom, the Taliban and the Al-Qaeda network promise more attacks on American soil – and our country at large is concerned about bio-chemical warfare. I have to say that I am a bit concerned as we continue this war. They say that the worst kind of enemy is one that does not care about it’s own well being – and that is exactly the kind of enemy that we are facing.

I realize that the terrorists want us to live in fear, and by being concerned, I am feeding into the terrorist’s goal – but after witnessing first hand the terrorist’s initial unprovoked strike – I can only wonder what they will do now that we are striking them.

And it appears that I am not alone in my fear. Yesterday at the OEM Command Center, a military plane flew overhead creating a loud roar. As it passed over the Command Center – everyone froze and looked at the sky for a good minute – concerned as to whether the plane that we heard was friendly – or otherwise.

Just as everyone else is, I am hoping that this war will end quickly and victoriously for the United States – and I hope that this war will also bring an end to terrorism worldwide and bring those responsible for terrorism to justice. But most of all – I am hoping that there are no more attacks on American soil and no more loss of innocent lives.

But unfortunately – all I can do is hope – and face the uncertain future.

“Look at your young men fighting.
Look at your women crying.
Look at your young men dying.
The way they’ve always done before.
Look at the hate we’re breeding.
Look at the fear we’re feeding.
Look at the lives we’re leading.
The way we’ve always done before.”
