Cry Havoc! And Let Slip The Dogs Of War!
By Paul Wein
In just four hours, something will happen that will change the face of wrestling forever. For the first time since modern professional wrestling has entertained its millions and millions of fans the WWF, the WCW, and the ECW will face off on the same pay-per-view appropriately titled Invasion.
This dream come true for all wrestling fans became a reality thanks to the man that has secured his place as the Bill Gates of professional wrestling. The man that took an existing idea and made it so popular and such a part of the mainstream that it has crossed over to venues and genres never thought possible before. This one man succeeded where so many have failed before him including his own father in making professional wrestling a recognizable, popular and profitable commodity that spans from television, to radio, to cable television, to the Internet, to home video to pay-per-view. His name is Vince McMahon.
Thanks to Vince McMahon, each and every wrestling fan has been treated to two months of television shows that have had two companies that were once so competitive that they stole each others ideas, storylines and wrestlers week after week compete now on the same television show, with no copyright infringements, no lawsuits over the use of trademarked names, likenesses and logos and no corporate egos only to culminate in the pay-per-view of pay-per-views in just a few hours.
In the twenty six years that I have watched wrestling and the almost ten years that I have been a part of the industry I never thought this day would come. There were times when we got a taste of it when one organization would mention the others name but only in a derogatory sense. There were days when we would see a dream match come true but only because a wrestler from one federation would leave for the other and there were nights when we would be shocked that the logo of one rival company would appear on the others program but only because someone was wearing a T-shirt with the logo on it. Now the days of wishing and hoping have been replaced by the one night where everything is on the line and everyone is going for all the marbles.
For tonight, Team WWF comprised of Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle, Kane, The Undertaker and World Wrestling Federation Champion Stone Cold Steve Austin, will face team WCW/ECW made up of the Dudley Boys, Bubba Ray And D-Von, Rhyno, Diamond Dallas Page and WCW Champion Booker T. As for what will happen I have no idea because I never even saw this coming. As for what I hope will happen I just want to see the night I have always waited for when the big three could forget about the trademarks, and copyrights and licenses and remember that if not for the people in the seats surrounding the ring they would have nothing to fight over in the first place.
But tonight they are fighting for everything let the war begin!
