A Penny For My Thoughts

First On The List – Fix The House

By Paul Wein

When I was in Alaska, I made myself a promise that I would “fix” a lot of the things in my life that needed a little repair. Of all the things on that “fix” list – one of them was my house – which looks a lot better then it did when I got home from Alaska just fourteen days ago.

I decided that among the other things in my life that I decided needed my attention – one of them was the home I lived in. Although it had never looked better in the almost two years that I lived in it – there were still a few things that were needed to complete the puzzle.

The first thing I did was evict the birds that took up residence in my bedroom air conditioner and replace it with a computerized, quiet performing model that was given to me by my friend John – and is so cold that I have to shut it off in the middle of the night because I am too cold to sleep.

Another item that need my attention were the beautiful living room and a office, and bedroom windows, which besides giving me a wonderful view – wakes me up with the most awful blinding sunlight I have ever felt poke through my closed eyes. So in order to combat this horrible wake up call – I decided to get vertical blinds – to both wipe out the sun from piercing through my eyes – and to add to the dιcor of my house. So in order to accomplish those two things, and to cool off the house by keeping the heat of the sun outside – I shelled out four hundred and twenty five dollars – and the results have been worth every penny.

Along with the air conditioner and the blinds, I have added a few other items to the house, like a mini blind for the terrace door, a second VCR to dub my tapes, new light bulbs for the bathroom, a cork board surrounded by a frame of beer bottle caps – and a woman that has truly made this house a home by filling it with her personal effects, her presence – and her love.

There are still a few things I need. For example, I could use a blender for the bar, a microwave for the kitchen, a mirror for inside the shower – and a few more pictures for the wall. But considering all that I have accomplished in the last two weeks – I say it’s only a matter of time before those missing items are acquired.

Although I have lived here for two years, I now truly feel at home thanks to the fact that the house is finally the way I want it – which means that the best times in this house are yet to come.
