Wasn’t I Supposed To Be Off Today?
By Paul Wein
Today is Saturday, which means that my regular nine to five job at the Department of Buildings is not somewhere I have to report to today. For today, I can wake up when I want to, spend the day at home if I choose to – and do whatever I decide to – or at least I thought.
My day off today began with a beep from the City Hall Police Desk telling me that New York 1 needs to speak with me. After thanking the reporter that called me for waking me up – my day pretty much went downhill from there – and turned into a day where I did more off the clock then I do on it.
From doing my laundry, to going to store after store after store, to cleaning my house, to going food shopping, to buying necessities for the house, to cooking dinner – I wanted to go back to work so I could relax. It seemed as if I did not stop all day. There were times when one thing I had to do began immediately after something else I had to do was complete – and there were times I did a few things at once. At one point – I even paid my landlord’s son twenty dollars to install a mini blind that I was too stressed out to install.
I will confess that besides the work involved in everything that I did today – I did accomplish a lot today and get some good things out of the labor intensive day I had. I got to spend some quality time with my mom, I got to get a few things for the house that I needed – and I got to scratch a few things off of my “to do” list – which is never a bad thing.
I guess because we have no choice but to spend five out of our seven days of the week at work – we sometimes have no other option then to turn one of our off days into a day to do the things we can’t do Monday through Friday – but when that day ends and you realize that you have another whole day off until you go back to work – like tomorrow – it makes it all worth while.
