A Penny For My Thoughts

Time To Punch In

By Paul Wein

Today is the day that no one who goes on vacation looks forward to – the day you return to work. So after six days of waking up when I want and doing what I please – this morning, I had to get up at five, put my suit on – and head into the office once again.

But the truth is, as I sit here at my desk just before my first day back to work begins – I am not dreading the day ahead in the least.

As I have said countless times, my definition of success is not how much money you make – but whether or not you love what you do. Personally, I love what I do so much that I never missed a day of doing the South Park Digest, never missed a Ring Fever taping – and look forward to going to work at the Department of Buildings – because to me – I would not classify any of those three things as a “job”, because they are all something I enjoy. So when it was time to come back to the office today – I didn’t dread it at all.

Granted, I would love to still be in Colorado enjoying my vacation rather then actually having to work, but the job I do here at the DOB is something I don’t consider to be a “job”. To be honest, when I am sitting behind my desk – I feel as if I am in another room of my house. They say that people “live” in their offices since they spend eight hours a day for five days a week there. So if that is true, then this is one room in my “house” that I don’t mind being in.

And that is why, despite the fact that I did actually have to put on a suit and get up at five o’clock this morning – I don’t mind being here, because I love what I do.

I have to go now – it’s time to punch in.

“And if your train’s on time,
you can get to work by nine,
and start your slaving job and get your pay.
But if you ever get annoyed,
look at me, I’m self-employed,
I love to work at nothin’ all day.”
