A Penny For My Thoughts

A Pain In The Gas

By Paul Wein

Now that I have a car, the need to fill ‘er up has once again become a necessity for me. So when I visited the gas station for the first time after getting the car – I was amazed to discover that the average price for a gallon of gasoline was two dollars. Can someone please tell me how this happened?

I remember when gasoline was ninety-nine cents a gallon – and that was only a few years ago. Now, the price for a gallon of gas has doubled. Why? Why has this Government allowed gasoline to reach these unbelievable prices? To pay ten dollars and get only a quarter of a tank is highway robbery – but what is worse then that is the fact that our Government has oil reserves that can power every car in America for the next ten years – and won’t release one drop.

I understand that it is important to reserve the reserve for a nationwide emergency – but the fact that gasoline prices have reached an all time high to me is a national emergency. If the Government would release just one years worth of the oil reserve – gas prices would plummet and motorists would not be spending half their paycheck just to stay on the road.

Apparently I am not the only one who is upset about the current price of gas. I read in the paper last week that a local gas station owner was selling gas for ninety-nine cents a gallon – costing him nearly eight thousand dollars in lost income. When he was asked why he was doing this, he said that he was trying to give motorists a break and make a statement at the same time. His statement worked all right – because there was a mile long line to get to his station.

I think if this nation really wants to make a statement – every motorist should not purchase gasoline for a full week. Not only would that crush the profits of the gasoline companies – but it would send a clear message that we as drivers are not going to tolerate such high prices just to be able to drive our cars.

And what really kills me about the whole gasoline crisis is that we don’t even need gasoline anymore. Electric vehicles that do not require even one drop of gasoline were invented years ago. So why are we still making gas powered vehicles?

So to my fellow motorists, I feel your pain when you hit the pump. Let’s just hope that prices go down before they go up.
