Not Bats In My Belfry, But Close Enough
By Paul Wein
This could only happen to me.
I woke up recently to the sounds of what seemed like rustling and loud chirping coming from what appeared to be my air conditioner. I assumed that the noise was coming from birds that were sitting on top of the air conditioner in my bedroom – I was almost right. It turns out that the noise was birds all right – but they were not on top of my air conditioner – they were inside my air conditioner.
Apparently when the air conditioner was installed, the backing was never put on. So while I saw my air conditioner as a means of cooling off in the summer – the birds saw it as a place to keep warm in the winter. So they actually made a bird’s nest inside my air conditioner and in the process – broke it.
I am all for nature and stuff – but this made me really mad. Besides the fact that I now have to buy a new air conditioner – waking up to incessantly loud chirping at five o’clock every morning is quickly getting on my nerves.
My question is – what do I do? I don’t want to harm the birds – but I can’t let this go on anymore. I have no choice but to remove the air conditioner and put the backing on. The problem I have is that when I take out the air conditioner – I have to bring it inside the house to take it out of the sleeve. What happens if when I do that – I wind up getting birds in my house? Also, I have no idea if there are baby birds in the nest – and they say that if a nest is disturbed – the mother bird will abandon her young. I don’t want to be a parent to human children much less feathered ones. And worst of all – the mess that carrying an air conditioner full of twigs through my house will create makes me cringe already – but what other choice do I have?
I guess I will make an attempt to evict the birds this weekend – just don’t tell Alfred Hitchcock.
