I’m Really Sore At The IRS
By Paul Wein
Everyone hates to pay taxes. We all get mad when the money we earn for working our butts off is cut almost in half by the Government and taken from you before you even get your paycheck – but I think the only thing worst then that is when you pay taxes all year and then have to pay them again on April 15th instead of getting a refund. Well, guess who this just happened to?
It’s bad enough that I lose almost three hundred dollars in taxes each week – which is as much as my take home salary was at my first job when I was in college – but then to hope for a refund and instead pay hundreds more dollars to the Government on top of what they take every week really angers me. Every year I look forward to April 15th as a day when some of the thousands of dollars I pay in taxes all year long is finally returned to me – not this year.
I think it’s really unfair that I am not getting a refund. The reason for this, according to my accountant Karen is because I am in a “higher tax bracket” – so? If I am in a “higher tax bracket” – then that means I pay more taxes – which is an even better reason as to why I should get a refund instead of pay again. I mean, is it me or does having to pay the Government instead of getting a refund because you pay higher taxes all year make sense?
The worst part about having to pay the Government is that I have no choice. What am I going to do – not pay them? If I don’t – then they could garnish my salary – that’s funny – they do that every week anyway. So now I have to give the Government even more of the money I work to earn for myself and do nothing but hope that they give me a little back next year.
I realize that without taxes – the Government can’t function. In fact – taxes collected from New Yorkers pay my salary – so I understand the need for taxes. But shouldn’t April 15th be a day that everyone gets a little bit of the money that they have no choice but to pay the Government? I think that would make April 15th a day that everyone looks forward to rather then dreads as the day grows closer.
I have an idea – maybe when I send the money to the Government – I’ll send it in pennies.
