A Penny For My Thoughts

Another Year Over, A New One’s Just Begun

By Paul Wein

It’s hard to believe, but in two days, the year 2000 will be over. It seems like only yesterday that I was sitting in Madison Square Garden counting down the last few hours of the 20th Century at the Billy Joel concert – and now, it’s time for the ball to drop once again.

When I was a kid, years would seem so long and time seemed to go by so slow. Now, hours go by like minutes, and years go by much to quickly. But for a year that seemed to fly by, so much happened in these last twelve months both in the world we live in – and in my own world as well.

From the Yanks and Mets going to the Subway Series for the championship to Gore and Bush going to the Supreme Court for the presidency of the United States, this year did see its share of historical events. In addition, there were a number of people that seemed to unexpectedly captivate America’s attention. From an 8-year-old Cuban boy who came here on a raft and wound up getting his face plastered on every newspaper in the country instead of the freedom he sought – to a woman who wanted to marry a millionaire and got an annulment and a Playboy spread instead of the “happy marriage” she wanted. We saw gas prices soar and stock prices drop. Our paper money got a face lift and our dollar bill became a golden coin. Michael J. Fox got Parkinson’s Disease and Robert Downey Jr. got busted – again.

Besides what happened in the rest of the world – my own life saw its share of historical events take place. I went from living out of suitcases to living in a duplex apartment. I got the chance to put my college degree to use by doing a brief radio gig on Piledriver! The Rock And Wrestling Radio Show. I hit my one year anniversary as Moderator of the South Park Booster Club. I got the chance to call Hulk Hogan at home and speak to him for a good twenty minutes about wrestling. I wrote my two hundredth penny – and I once again wound up in the hospital because of my medically broken heart.

And now, we must say good-bye to our two thousandth year and head into 2001. Once again we await the moment when we count down the last few seconds of a year and ring in a new year that is full of possibilities, hope – and unknown experiences. Let’s hope it’s a good one for all of us.

“A picture postcard, a folded stub, a program of the play.
File away your photographs of your holiday.
And your mementos will turn to dust, but that’s the price you pay.
For every year, is a souvenir – that slowly fades away.
