A Penny For My Thoughts

Ok, Ok, So The Mets Won Game Three

By Paul Wein

With two games under their belt, the Yankees headed into Shea with an unprecedented fourteen consecutive World Series game winning streak and the possibility of winning a third game in this Subway Series which would have paved the way for their third consecutive sweep – but as in most cases – life never works the way you want it to.

After dropping two to the Bronx Bombers, the Mets came home and came back to take Game 3 with a 4-2 victory last night at Shea. It was another classic battle in this Subway Series that has given fans of both teams some memorable games. This time – it was the pitching that took the spotlight. Both El Duque and Rick Reed’s favorite letter was “K” last night as they pitched textbook innings, earning an incredible 25 strikeouts between them. It seemed as if the players had holes in their bats as near perfect pitches seemed to float by their bats like passing ships in the night. The floating stopped however in the second inning when The Mets Robin Ventura sent a solo shot over the wall to score the first run for the Amazins.

I’ll admit that I had a feeling that the Mets would win this one. Their first home game of the Series, they came home two games in the hole and had a stadium full of their fans ready to cheer them on to victory. My feeling was confirmed after Ventura’s homer. When the Yanks tied the game and then took the lead with Jeter expertly sliding home, I hoped that my feeling was incorrect – but then the Mets re-tied the game and I had a feeling that I was right after all.

I sweat the most in the 6th inning. When El Duque had the bases loaded and no outs – I feared that El Duque would let a grand slam slip by which would put the Mets way ahead – and make me eat crow at work the next morning. Thankfully – he got out of that inning without allowing anymore runs. But when the 8th inning came and the Mets broke the tie and still had a man on first and third – I knew that this game wasn’t going to the Yankees.

I have to admit – the Mets played one hell of a game. With a two game deficit and the hometown fans behind them, that was the winning combination they needed to end the Yanks fourteen game World Series winning streak. And with games four and five at Shea – could the Mets take the lead? Remember – they won the World Series in 1986 after dropping the first two games.

My opinion? History won’t repeat itself – because this time – they’re playing the Yankees.
