A Penny For My Thoughts

And To Think, This Was Only Game One

By Paul Wein

At 1:00am last night, my throat was sore from screaming, my hands hurt from clapping – and I had more adrenalin in my body then blood after watching the New York Yankees beat the New York Mets after an incredible twelve inning see-saw battle – and that was only game one.

When I heard that the Yanks and Mets would meet in the World Series for the first time ever, I knew that everyone would be in for a real treat. With the title of Kings of New York on the line – I knew these two teams would pull out all the stops to make sure that they walked away the World Series champs. With that in mind, it makes perfect sense why game one was played like it was game seven.

As my friends and I sat down to watch the game, we were all decked out in our favorite team’s regalia. I also put up some Subway Series posters for the big game – because no matter who wins the Series – I am really excited about the fact that for the first time ever – the Yanks and Mets are in the series together. So I am going to make the most out of this once-in-a-lifetime event.

From the first pitch, the tone was set for a real knock down, drag out fight. Both Al Leiter and Andy Pettite pitched near perfect games up to the 4th inning when the Yankees batted in the first two runs. It was only an inning later when the Mets rallied and tied the game at two a piece. Then the Yanks took the lead once again with a run – only to have the Mets tie the game once again at three a piece.

By the ninth inning, it was evident that the game would go into extra innings – because both teams were playing like they were not going to let the other gain the upper hand. The best evidence of this was when the Mets’ Timo Perez ran towards home to give the Mets the first run of the night – but was blocked by Jorge Posada – myself and the rest of the Yankee fans went nuts – much to the dismay of the Met fans in the room.

As the game’s innings went into the double digits – everyone was on the edge of their seat – if they were still sitting. With each pitch thrown, fans of both teams hoped for the best as each extra inning progressed in this first showdown of the Series – because whoever won the first game would start to get the braggin rights that are so important in this City.

It wasn’t over until the twelfth inning when Jose Visciaino whacked a single that gave the Yankees the first win of this Subway Series. The funny thing is that while us Yankee fans were cheering and screaming throughout the game – by the time they won we could hardly cheer. The game was such a hard fought, see-saw battle that we were exhausted by the time the Yanks scored the winning run.

I felt a sort of personal victory when the Yankees won. I found it funny that the winning run was brought in by Visciaino – Number thirteen. And, this win gave the Yankees their thirteenth consecutive World Series win – coincidence? I think not.

So congrats to the Yankees. Only three more to go.
