A Penny For My Thoughts

After Midnight, We Gonna Let It All Hangout

By Paul Wein

In one week, my friends Doug and Amy are getting married. So, in keeping with the traditions of the laws of marriage – this past Saturday was Doug’s bachelor party and Amy’s bachelorette party.

To be honest, I never understood the reason for this form of celebration. The unofficial official reason is so the bride and groom can live “their last night as a single person”. So their friends get them drunk and have a stripper strip for them. It’s funny, because when I was single – that’s not how I spent my nights.

But the truth is, it is nice for all the girls to get together and all of the guys to get together and go have a blast and not come home until the sun rises. Saturday night, the girls had a party at Sandy and my place consisting of food, wine – and the aforementioned stripper, and then hopped in a limo to go dancing at a club. While the guys hopped in a limo and headed to the Comedy Cellar for a few laughs – and then back to our friend Jay’s house for the aforementioned stripper.

From what I heard, the girls had a great time – and I’m glad for that. I hope Amy was surprised at what the girls had planned for her. She is such a sweetheart and to have all of her friends around her to celebrate this special day in her life must be a great feeling.

The same goes for Doug. We have been friends for so long, but due to our busy schedules, it is very rare when we can go out and forget about everything – and to finally be able to go out with all of our buds in a limo with cigars and all was the perfect way to congratulate Doug on his big day.

There was only one drawback to the festivities – I had to separate myself from Sandy for the whole day. I know that sounds silly, but we rarely get time to see each other that sometimes I feel like we are living in separate houses, so the weekends are the time we reserve for us. Due to this weekend’s parties, which required us to go out separately, I had to kiss her goodbye Saturday morning and say, “I’ll see you tomorrow.”

As the night went on, we didn’t speak, because she was partying and so was I, but at least five times she paged me with a 143 – which is “I Love You” for those who do not speak beeper. Despite the fact that she was “out with the girls” and I was “out with the boys” – she still thought of me and I of her – except I can’t page her because she doesn’t have a beeper – but the thought was still there.

So congrats Doug and Amy – one more week until you’re Mr. And Mrs. Farnum. All this talk about marriage has me thinking – Sandy Wein has a nice ring to it.
