A Penny For My Thoughts

Damn This Traffic Jam

By Paul Wein

If you are a driver, then you can’t get behind the wheel without encountering the biggest menace on the roads. The creature that brings cars going fifty five miles an hour to a complete stop and brings entire highways to a complete standstill – traffic.

I never understood traffic. If every car is going in the same direction – then why does traffic occur? Why do entire fleets of cars suddenly find themselves crawling along the highway at a pace that would make a snail laugh? What is the cause of this driver’s nightmare? The answer may vary – but the outcome is the same – it drives drivers crazy.

There are obviously legitimate reasons for traffic – a horrible accident for example. But in most cases, traffic occurs for the same reason – stupidity.

Stupidity is the main cause for traffic – and there are many different versions of stupidity.

• There is the “ooh, look! A cop car! I’d better slow down!” driver that – to avoid getting a speeding ticket – winds up going six miles an hour.

• The “Hey look! There’s someone stuck on the side of the road! Let’s slow down and look at them!” driver that stops to look at a car with its hazards on like they have never seen one before.

• The “I just pulled onto the highway, so I’ll drive two miles an hour” driver that brings cars going fifty to a screeching halt – and keeps them there.

And my personal favorite:

• The truck driver that approaches an overpass with a fifteen foot clearance driving a truck with a seventeen foot clearance and thinks that if he goes really fast – he’ll make it.

Traffic will never go away as long as these types of drivers are behind the wheel and on the road – so I guess we’re stuck.

“Well I left my job about five o’ clock.
It took fifteen minutes to go three blocks.
Just in time to stand in line
with the freeway looking like a parking lot .”
