Are Gray Skies Ever Gonna Clear Up?
By Paul Wein
As the song says, “Rainy days and Mondays always get me down”. But what about when its been a “rainy day” for nearly three weeks in a row?
This summer, New York City has had record amounts of rainfall. I can’t remember the last time there was, as another song says, “A bright, bright sunshiny day”. All we have been experiencing is gray skies, heavy rain – and a very soggy summer.
When it rains, it certainly puts a damper on any summer-ish type activities you may have planned. The beach is out of the question, a barbecue is an impossibility, a day in the park is a no-go, the amusement park ain’t happenin’ – in fact, the only thing left to do when it rains is to stay inside – and pray for sun.
In all seriousness, the last day I remember being a perfect summer day was when Sandy and I spent the day at my mother’s pool – two months ago. Since that day, the hot, blue sky summer days have disappeared and been replaced with cold, gray sky autumn/winter type days that take the whole magic right out of summer.
Take yesterday for example. Sandy and I were lucky enough to spend the day together, so we were hoping we could head to the beach or my mom’s pool and catch a few rays. When we woke up, we were freezing because we thought we left the air conditioner on too high – but the air wasn’t on. In fact, it was so cold that instead of my typical summer outfit which consists of a T-shirt and jean shorts – I actually had to wear a sweat suit yesterday – it was that cold outside.
That has been the normal temperature and weather pattern for most of the summer this year. Personally, I find that very upsetting. Rain can put such a damper on the summertime. Sure, a day here or there is fine – but when the rainy days outnumber the sunny ones – that’s when your whole summer is shot.
What happened to “April Showers”?
