A Penny For My Thoughts

Oh, Boy Bands!

By Paul Wein

This summer, the music scene has been flooded by more superstars who are not even old enough to drink yet then in any other time in history. All of these “new kids on the block” – no pun intended – are more popular then anyone else in the industry. It seems that everywhere I turn, I see five boys in white suits singing to me. This morning was a classic example of this fact. I turned the Today show on and saw thousands of 12 to 14 year old crying and screaming teenage girls who camped out all night long to see N’Sync perform live. Are you for real?

I don’t get the obsession with boy bands – and I never will. From Menudo to the Backstreet Boys, I can’t figure out why girls are obsessed with four or five guys who have only a first name, all wear the same outfits – and dance in sync – again – no pun intended. What makes these boy bands so popular? What is so exciting about these boys that makes little girls cry over them? And the most important question – what is going to happen to the members of these boy bands when they are young men and they are no longer “cool”?

What members of boy bands don’t realize when they are at the height of their popularity is that it’s not going to last forever. Singers like Metallica, Billy Joel, The Rolling Stones and The Beatles are loved by people of all ages and have therefore stood the test of time. They were popular when they first came on the scene, they are popular now – and they will be popular until music is a thing of the past. Boy bands achieve the popularity they do because young girls consider them “cool”. Sure, they are adored by millions of screaming girls and sell out in every place they perform now – but what happens when those teenage girls grow up? Or when the next “cool” band comes on the scene? – I’ll tell you what will happen – they will go the way of The New Kids On The Block, a band that was so popular they were everywhere, they were on television, in concert in almost every state in the country – and adored by so many millions of screaming and crying teenage girls that they were the most popular band on the scene – but where are they now? And besides that, try asking one of those millions of girls that adored the New Kids if they still listen to them, or if they even remember one of their songs? – I bet their answer will be “no”.

So to the Backstreet Boys, N’Sync, LFO, Hanson – and the next bundle of boy bands that will soon grace the airwaves. Take some friendly advice. When you boys hit number one on the Billboard charts and have the admiration of almost every teenage girl in America – enjoy it while you can – because that won’t be for very long.

“I am the entertainer, and I know just where I stand.
Another serenader and another long haired band.
Today I am your champion, I may have won your hearts.
But I know the game,
you’ll forget my name,
and I won’t be here
in another year,,
if I don’t stay on the charts.”

Billy Joel – The Entertainer
