A Penny For My Thoughts

The Not So Next Best Thing

By Paul Wein

We are a society that constantly tries to better itself. Every time we invent something that can get the job done fast – we want it done faster. So we make sure we buy the latest and most recent products available to ensure that we are up-to-date when it comes to technology. But almost as soon as we open the box to unpack our new top-of-the-line piece of equipment – it’s suddenly not so top-of-the-line anymore. The item we thought was the fastest is now obsolete – and if we want the fastest item, we now have to discard the one we just bought and go out and by the newest model so we can be up-to-date once more – that is – until they make the next one.

It seems that no matter how hard we try, we can’t stay on top of technology. Each time they put out something – they’re making the next model. Think of any product you own and tell me that it was not outdated just months after you bought it.

Take the disk for instance. First, they make a hard disk to replace the floppy disk; which is replaced by a disk that holds 100 times that of a hard disk; then they make one that holds one gig; then two gigs; and now they are working on one that holds five gigs. And what about software? You buy version 4, only to learn that version 5 will be out next month. And if that’s not enough, just when you think your home computer has the fastest processor, the most memory and the highest amount of hard drive space – guess what – it doesn’t.

So what can we do? We want the best and fastest technology, so we have to keep upgrading to meet demand – yet we hate when the item we just bought is so quickly outdated. I guess the faster technology moves – the slower our computers and our ability to catch up to it will get.
