30 Hats For One Head
By Paul Wein
Among the things I collect, I have an extensive collection of hats. I have at least 60 different hats ranging from beer hats to cigar hats to hats I have acquired through the different jobs I have had, I have enough hats to cover the heads of all of my friends – and then some. It is ironic that I have so many actual hats – because I symbolically wear so many different ones each day.
I do so many different things in my life, that I find myself “wearing” at least three different “hats” a day. Each day, I speak to people and introduce myself at least three different ways. “Hi, it’s Paul from Ring Fever”, or “It’s Paul Wein from the Department of Buildings”, or “Hey, it’s Paul from South Park”. No matter the day of the week, I am constantly wearing at least three different hats each day – but I love it. In their own way, they are each a part of me.
They say the sign of true success is not the amount of money you make – it’s when you have a job that you truly love. Well, I am happy and proud to say that each job I do, I love. No matter what the job is that I have to do each and every day, there is not one I hate to do – the problem lies in trying to separate them.
I can distinctly recall several days where the many things I do would overlap and cause me problems. My most memorable is when I was filming Wrestlefest for Ring Fever. The Commissioner of the Department of Buildings called me regarding a building collapse, and as I am on the phone with him outside the arena – the ring announcer is introducing me to the crowd and I missed my cue. Another memorable moment was when I was on the phone with the New York Times giving them a statement regarding a Department matter – and as I am talking to the reporter – I am finishing the South Park Digest. Granted, sometimes separating the things I do can be tough, but somehow, I always manage to get everything done without a problem.
I’ll admit, there are times when I have to do all three jobs at once. One Saturday, I had to write a column for Ring Fever and do the South Park Digest – and sure enough – a building collapsed. So now, I am at home trying to write a column, post a Digest, and talk to the press all at the same time. Sometimes, I don’t know how I do it.
I do it because I am motivated by the fact that I love the things I do. When you have a job that you hate, you dread doing it – but when you get up every morning looking forward to working – you would be able to get as much done as I do.
They say God only gives you what you can handle, if this is true, I guess I can handle a lot.
