This Winter Is Snow Picnic
By Paul Wein
This past Saturday, my new hometown received ten inches of snow – the second biggest snowfall of the Winter of 2010 – and of my discontent. Tonight, once again, snow is falling and will continue until sometime either tomorrow night or Thursday…
…leaving nearly two feet more on the ground.
I hate winter to begin with, but this one has really pissed me off. We have gotten more snow this year so far then I can remember – about as much snow as the winters when I was a child. And the worst part is – the first day of Spring is still 39 days away. With more snow predicted for next Monday – I wonder – what’s in store for us for the next month-and-a-half?
I remember telling many people at work that if we had as much rain as we did this past summer – over 52 inches – I knew that we would get just as bombarded in snowfall – I just wish I wasn’t right. But while rain sucks – snow is worse because it stays around like the friend who won’t leave after the party’s over. It melts during the day and turns to sheets of ice in the morning. It hurts your eyes to look at when the sun beats down on its white surface. And worst of all – once it is finally all gone or at least out of the way so life can somewhat get back to normal – more arrives and screws everything up again.
Before I found out earlier today that my Fort is closed tomorrow due to the incoming blizzard which gives me the day off. I asked my boss if tomorrow, I could take not a vacation day – but a “screw this day.” In other words, I am so sick of having to trek through ice, snow and bitter cold that I just wanted to weld my door shut and wait out the storm. She was kind enough to say yes and while I thank her for that – I also thank the Fort’s commander for realizing that keeping the Fort open was a dangerous idea for everyone involved who had to travel through such bad weather to get there.
So, as I once again have no choice but to live inside a snow globe for the next day-and-a-half, I will do so in a warm house with my wife by my side and all the supplies I need…
…and watch the cars, grass and streets outside my window disappear once again.
Yay.
