I “Saw” It – And I Loved It
By Paul Wein
Most of the time, horror movies make way too many sequels and destroy the first movie. Take Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street and Scream for example. But as far as the Saw series goes – I hope they make a hundred more – because they never get old, tired, or boring.
Julie and I recently saw Saw VI – which is the latest installment of the movies where Jigsaw, the movies prime serial killer – “wants to play a game.” In this one, Mark, the person who continues to carry out Jigsaw’s games, is still at it. We also learn a lot more of the back history behind Jigsaw and Mark – and the reasons they both became serial killers. I cannot tell you how cool it is that this series is able to continue even though the original killer Jigsaw and his accomplice Amanda died three movies ago.
One unique feature that the Saw movies do have is that they are able to return to scenes from all five previous movies – and extend them. For example, in this latest installment, we see the scene from Saw III where John’s aka Jigsaw’s wife gets assaulted and loses their miracle baby thanks to a junkie – with extra footage that somehow ties his future accomplice Amanda to the attack. We also learn the contents of a letter that Amanda opened in that same movie – which brings a whole new connection between everyone involved in the Jigsaw murders.
Whenever Julie and I go to see one of the Saw movies, she doesn’t watch the movie – but rather – my intense reactions. Since the first in the series of the six movies – I have been so immersed in the storyline that when something shocking or revealing happened in the storyline – I grabbed my head and dropped open my mouth in shock – and she thinks it is one the cutest things she has ever seen. I must have done that a dozen times in this movie – along with piece together what has happened out loud. Only I could make Julie laugh during a “slash and gore” horror movie.
When it was over and we went outside the theater so I could smoke a much needed cigarette – I sat there in complete amazement and disbelief. I was saying things like, “So now she’s involved and…,” “So he knew from day one that…,” “So Mark saved his body because…,” – during which Julie was hysterical. They left it open for a Saw VII – and as far as I am concerned – I am already there.
If you have not seen any of the Saw films – I suggest that you go and rent all five previous ones – and then make a point to see Saw VI. This series is not your typical horror movie – but one that frightens your mind more than your body. It makes you think instead of scaring the crap out of you. It blows your mind and doesn’t “boo” scare you. And most importantly – it makes you want more rather than care less.
Is Saw VII out yet?
