A Penny For My Thoughts

What Are You Doing New Years?

By Paul Wein

In less than three weeks, New Years Eve will be upon us. While many people usually make plans to party hardy on December 31st – this year, we can all party like it’s 1999 – because it finally is. So what are you doing New Years?

Usually, everyone plans to get together with their friends to eat, drink, be merry and of course – watch the ball drop. While most holidays usually entail doing the same thing – dinner at a relative’s house or your family coming to you, New Year’s Eve is the one holiday where you can plan to do whatever you want and not have to be obligated to go somewhere.

This New Year’s Eve is probably the most anticipated ever – for when the clock strikes 12:00:00 on January 1st, it will be 2000. I must admit that this is an exciting time to be alive. Think about it, we will all witness the dawn of a new millennium. Y2Krap aside for a moment, don’t you feel lucky that you are alive to witness such a once-in-a-lifetime event?

So because it is such an important New Year’s Eve, people have been planning this December 31st for a long time. Since the countdown to the millennium began, hotels have been booked, parties have been planned, and preparations have been made all over the world months and even years in advance. So what have you planned?

I am the first person to go to a party. I have hosted hundreds and been a guest at hundreds more. So when I hear the word party – I am there – but not this year. This year, I want to enter the new millennium with the woman who I plan to be with until the year 3000. The woman who, in the short time that she has been in my life, has made more of an impact on my life than anyone I have ever known. The woman who through her smile, her touch and her spirit ignites my confidence like a forest fire that makes me feel like I can do anything – the woman I waited for my whole life – my Sandy.

So instead of spending this New Year’s Eve with our friends, I thought we would spend the eve of the millennium somewhere quiet and alone. So this year, it will just be me, her – and twenty thousand other people at Madison Square Garden for the Billy Joel Night of Two Thousand Years Concert.

I decided on the concert as the place to spend this New Year’s Eve for a few reasons. One, I love Billy Joel. Two, Sandy has never been to a concert before I met her, so hearing that, I wanted to take her to a concert right away. I took her to the Eurythmics concert in October, and now this one. And third, no matter where you go on New Year’s Eve, you will spend a ridiculous amount of money anyway – and you may as well – what will you do, wait until next millennium? The bottom line is this New Year’s Eve is a once-in-a-lifetime night – and to me, she is more than worth it.

So whatever you are doing New Year’s Eve, have a great time and make sure you party like it’s about to be 2000.

Happy millennium.
