A Penny For My Thoughts

Earth Is A Half A Block Long

By Paul Wein

Despite the fact that there are billions of people living on a planet that is over 25,000 miles in diameter – did you ever stop to think what a small world this really is?

In a person’s life, they will meet thousands of different people, work at over a dozen different places and do thousands of different things in and around where they live. If every person does the same amount of things, works the same amount of places, and meets the same amount of people, eventually, they will meet someone who knows someone they know, or they will realize that they have a mutual friend with someone they work with – or, they might even meet someone who has dated someone they used to date. My point is, if you think about it, this world is not really as big as we think it is.

Think about it, we can’t go through life without meeting someone who knows someone we know. Statistically, it’s not possible. Can you honestly tell me that there is not one person you have met in your life that has known someone you know? I’m sure at one point in your life, you were having a conversation with someone and a name was brought up that both of you knew. It happens all the time.

Take me for instance, in the last month, I realized that many people I know now knew people from my past. For example, my friend Scott, who I just met recently, was friends with my first girlfriend Stacey and dated a girl that dated my ex-brother-in-law Bradd. I also learned that someone I work with dated the sister of my old boss at the Marketeer. If that’s not enough, another person that I work with went to school with – of all people – WWF Superstar Mankind.

I also learned recently that many people I know now were actually in the same place as me at the same time, but just did not know who I was. Both my friends Doug and Scott were at a wrestling show at the Padergat Athletic Club in Brooklyn, New York four years ago – and guess who the ring announcer was? Besides that, I met a girl named Amber two summers ago that went to the same summer camp as me. And the best – when I worked at The Brooklyn Baron, a building collapsed in Brooklyn and my paper quoted my current boss – how weird is that?

The moral of this story is no matter how big we think our world is, if you really think about it, Earth is a half a block long.

If you don’t believe me, the next time you have a conversation with someone, talk a little about yourselves – I bet you know each other a lot more than you think.
