A Penny For My Thoughts

Don't Talk To Me

By Paul Wein

I love listening to the radio. Originally, I wanted to be a radio discjockey "when I grew up" – I even have a college degree in Radio Broadcasting, so it is obvious that I love music and love listening to the radio. But if there is one time of the day that I absolutely hate listening to the radio – it’s in the morning.

I don’t know about you, but music usually helps me get going and get things done. Think about it, almost every office has a radio, because people like to listen to music while they work – so why do some of New York City’s (and I’m sure the rest of the world’s) major radio stations spend all morning talking about the stupidest things instead of playing music?

I noticed this more than ever this morning when I drove into work for the first time. I put the radio on and could not find a song to save my life. There are over 10 major New York City radio stations that play Top 40, album rock, dance, lite music, and alternative formats – but for some reason, in the morning, they all play the same format – talk.

Statistically, radio stations have their biggest audiences in the morning – so if most of a station’s listeners are listening to their favorite music station in the morning – why don’t they play music?

I know this sounds funny coming from someone who talks for a living, but when I get up in the morning, don’t talk to me, play music. Give me a good song to sing with in the shower, or to dance to while I’m getting dressed, or to groove to in the car or on the way to the train station. After all, if I wanted to hear talk, I would listen to AM Radio.

So to all the major radio stations I ask the following, keep your "phone scams" and your "happy na-nas" and your "stupid news" and pretend you are an FM Radio station that people listen to so they can hear their favorite songs – and then play them.
