A Penny For My Thoughts

And Justice For All?

By Paul Wein

If there is one thing in this country that has strayed over the last century more than anything else, it is the justice system. As Americans, we rely on our system of justice to hand down decisions that will bring forth justice to all of us in the event of a breach of the laws that are in place in this country. But I ask you, what has happened to that system?

Over the last 100 years, it seems – at least to me – that our country’s justice system is as efficient as a car with square wheels. From Middle America, to Brentwood, California, to right in my own backyard – justice is indeed, as they say, blind.

I think the biggest example of this is the OJ Simpson case. According to almost everyone in the country, OJ Simpson is guilty – so guilty in fact, that he, as the old saying goes, “will never work in this town again” because no one wants to hire him, yet Mike Tyson – a convicted rapist – has made millions of dollars boxing bout after bout on pay-per-view. If he is as guilty as we think he is, how come OJ Simpson was found not guilty?

Think about it, hasn’t there been a case you heard of on TV where you thought justice was not served? I can’t fathom why this country, which prides itself on “truth justice and the American way, has so much injustice. What are we, as a country, doing wrong?

I am writing this column because I experienced “American justice” first hand this week. On Wednesday, my mother was the unfortunate victim of a hit-and-run. She suffered only minor cuts and bruises – thank God – but the “person” – and I use that term loosely – that hit her, who by the way is a non-English-speaking immigrant, simply got out of the car, demanded that she stop shaking, and left her on the corner telling her that she was fine. When the police interviewed him, he stated that my mother hit the car – so the cops dropped the case.

So let me get this straight: my mom is cut and bruised because she decided to plow into a two-ton vehicle – and the cops drop the case taking the word of a “person” who can not even speak English over my mother the pedestrian, who last time I checked, always has the right of way.

“One nation, under God, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all.”

I think not.
