Climbing Your Family Tree
By Paul Wein
Have you ever thought about where you come from? All of us have ancestors. But have you ever really thought about how far back your “family line” goes?
All of us, at one point or another, have a point of origin where our family begins. This point of origin could date back hundreds – if not thousands of years and span all four corners of the globe. Did you ever stop and think about that?
I once, out of pure curiosity, asked my mother about her side of the family – and I found out something pretty interesting: In the town of Sicily in Italy, where her side of the family comes from, there is actually an avenue named after my family. As for my father’s side – all I know is that they were from Poland. That information got me thinking. There must be so many relatives that I have never even met all over the world that are my family, my flesh and blood. Maybe I have some of their characteristics, their traits or even their mannerisms.
My point is, have you ever considered how far back your family tree goes? I have checked on the origin of my last name, and the name “Wein” is derived from the word “wine”. What does that mean? Does this mean that my ancestors made wine? Does it mean that they worked at a winery? My point is that all of us have a family line that dates back very far into history – shouldn’t we learn where we came from?
Let me ask you a question, you obviously know who your grandmother and grandfather are, but do you know who their grandparents were? Or their grandparents? Well, they’re part of your family too, don’t you think it’s about time you should find out?
Thanks to today’s technology, there are plenty of websites and agencies that can assist you in this task, and before you know it, you will get a better understanding of who you are and where you came from.
What are you waiting for? Go find your family.
