Summer's Over
By Paul Wein
The other day, I brought my usual change of clothes to work, which consists of a T-shirt and a pair of jean shorts – but I could not put them on because it was too cold. The other night, I noticed it was getting dark and figured it must already be 8:30pm – but it was only 7:00pm. Last weekend, I went into a store and instead of the air conditioner – they had the heat on. These three things happening in the span of one week made me realize the inevitable – it made me realize that the summer was over.
I hate when the summer is over. I hate it because the long hot days and warm summer nights are replaced by cold days and even colder nights. The days of swimming in the ocean are replaced by swimming in layers of clothes. The nights of 9:00pm sundowns are replaced by darkness before you even get home from work. The weekends spent tanning are replaced by spending the weekend boxing up your shorts and tank tops and unboxing your sweaters and sweatshirts. And now that the cold weather days you begged for because it was so hot are actually here – don’t you want the summer back?
I’m not saying the rest of the year is terrible, I’m just saying that summer is always a season of limitless excitement because there is no limit to what you can do in the summer. From barbecues to beach parties, the weather – on most days – is cooperative. And wouldn’t it be safe to say that you do more things with more people in the summer as compared to the rest of the year?
Well, none of that matters now because the fall is upon us. But look on the bright side, there is always the turning leaves, pumpkin picking, Ocktoberfest – and 260 days until next summer.
