A Penny For My Thoughts

Sleep

By Paul Wein

As many of you know from reading this column, I lead a pretty active and hectic life. Between working for the Department Of Buildings, co-hosting a TV show, writing, and just running around trying to get everything else done, I find that my life is complete in every way – except one – the one and only thing in my life that is lacking is the one thing I need the most – sleep.

Do you get enough sleep? I bet if you took a survey of 100 people, half of them would say that they do not. Me? I never sleep. The amount of hours I sleep in a week probably totals the amount most people sleep in one night. And in the hours I am awake, I do more things in one day than most people do in a week. While this may be great for my schedule, its hell on my body. There are some days when my body has had enough and just shuts down. I have fallen asleep on the train, at my desk, and during the coolest parties. Do you believe I almost fell asleep during ? If that is not my body revolting, I don’t know what is.

It’s not that I don’t want to sleep, I just don’t have the time. On a typical day, I’m up at 6:30am and by the time I get home, its time to get up again. Even on the weekends, I’m up before 9:00am and on the go by 10:00am.

I guess I shouldn’t complain. The reasons for my lack of sleep are my own fault and no matter how tired I am, I just keep going. I have been told by friends and family to slow down, but it’s not that easy. Every day I have something to do. From interviews to plans with friends to saving civilization as we know it, life slows down but it never stops – so neither do I.

Do I try to slow down? Of course, but just when I think I can stay home and sleep, the phone rings, the pager buzzes, and off I go denying my body the rest it needs once again.

If I can offer you any advice, it’s this – no matter how hectic your life is, no matter how full your schedule, try to make time for sleep, your body will thank you.

And, if you could, sleep a few hours for me.
