A Penny For My Thoughts

Summer

By Paul Wein

The temperature is up and the sun takes longer to go down which can mean only one thing, summer is on the way.

I don’t know about you, but I have always found summer to be the best time of the year. When I was younger, I didn’t go to school or to work during the summer, so it was really special. But now, even though I work, I still find that summer holds a magic that the rest of the year does not. Admit it, when you hear that its time to turn the clocks ahead one hour, don’t you get excited? When you wake up, turn on the TV, and the five-day forecast shows all five days will be above 65 degrees, doesn’t it make you happy?

Although summer doesn’t officially begin until June 22nd, for most of us, it either begins on Memorial Day Weekend, or when we have the first straight week of warm weather. Summer may be less than 100 days long, but during those days, time seems to stand still. Think about it, the amount of cold weather days we have far outweigh the amount of warm weather days (at least here in New York City), but the summer seems to last longer than the rest of the year.

Ask yourself, how much did you do last summer? Personally, from Memorial Day Weekend to Labor Day Weekend 1998 – less than 100 days – I made more friends than I have ever made in my life, went to North Carolina for a week, went upstate for a weekend, taped dozens of episodes for my TV show, went to a Tattoo Convention, commentated at over 10 professional wrestling shows, attended a Blues & Brews Concert, a couple of cigar shows, a few barbecue parties, a beer fest or two, and still found time to work. Name another season where you get that much accomplished?

This will be my 28th summer, and I plan to make it the best ever. I plan to live life to the fullest, go everywhere, see everything, and spend time with everyone. I suggest you do the same.

Remember that the summer of 1999 is less than two months away! How will you spend yours?
