Change
By Paul Wein
Here’s a pop quiz: What is the one thing in everyone’s life that always stays the same? What is the one thing in our lives that we can count on to always be there more than anything else in our lives? Give up? It’s very simple – if you think about it – the answer... Change.
Webster’s American Family Dictionary defines change as, “...the passing from one state, phase, etc., to another...” If you think about it, as ironic as it may sound, change is the only thing in our lives that stays the same. Whenever we get comfortable in a situation, whether it be a friendship, a relationship, a job, a home, anything – eventually – the situation will, well, change.
Me, I’m one for stability. I would give anything for a situation in my life to stay the same just for a little while. Maybe it’s my anal-retentiveness, but I hate when my life changes and everything is turned upside down and I have to alter my existence to compensate for the situations or events unfolding around me.
I take pride in being the type of person who gives my all and my everything into whatever I get involved in. Be it a job, friendship, or a relationship, I immerse myself in the situation and stay involved twenty-four hours a day. So when that situation comes to an end, I am left with a void and left feeling like a part of me is gone.
But, by the grace of God, whenever one situation comes to an end, I can rest assured that He will put another situation, event or phase in my life that is better than the last, and I find myself involved in something new, that is even better than the last one, and my life improves greatly.
Let me ask you a question: Would you say that if you could view your life chronologically, from one event to another, from each time your life changed to the next time, would you say that your life has gotten better? In other words, with each job, relationship, event, home you have lived in, etc., would you conclude that each time your life has changed, the new experience is better than the last? And, based on your past, you can safely assume that the next time your life will change, it will be better than your current situation? I bet if you look back at your life, you will see that as your life has gone on, it has only gotten better.
It’s funny, because whenever I experience change, I find myself upset and angry that I have to turn my life upside down and adjust to my new situation. But, you know what, I won’t do that anymore, because I now know that each time my life does change, it improves – for the better. And that’s the point of this thought – to salute the one thing in our lives that we hate – but the one thing that we need – because without it – our lives wouldn’t keep improving.
So here’s to change, may it always be there – and always stay the same – because where there is change, there is improvement.
By the way, Webster’s American Family Dictionary defines improvement as, “a change or addition by which a thing is improved.”
See, I told you.
