A Penny For My Thoughts

GOOD RIDDANCE!

By Paul Wein

Today is a day that myself and many of my fellow Americans have looked forward to for the last eight years. A day that, in my opinion – could not have come soon enough. A day that will be long remembered as a day when all around the world, people took one collective sigh of relief.

President George W. Bush’s last full day in office.

Tomorrow, Barack Obama will be sworn in as the 44th President of the United States – and will have to spend months if not years cleaning up the messes of his predecessor. From a dying economy to two wars to a horrible reputation abroad, President Barack Obama will certainly have his hands full thanks to President George W. Bush.

In my opinion, George W. Bush was probably the worst President we have ever had. In fact, a CNN/Opinion Research Corp poll released in May, 2008 suggested that President Bush is the most unpopular president in modern American history. The poll indicated that 71 percent of the American public disapproved of how President Bush was handling his job as President. His approval rating, which stood at 28 percent at the time the poll was taken, remains better than the all-time lows set by Harry Truman and Richard Nixon [22 percent and 24 percent, respectively], but even those two Presidents never got a disapproval rating in the 70s. The previous all-time record in CNN or Gallup polling was set by President Harry Truman, who had a 67 percent disapproval rating in January, 1952.

My personal opinions and the results of the aforementioned poll aside, what really irks me about the man is how he could care less how the American public feels about him. How many times has he been lampooned in television shows, movies and on Saturday Night Live and Mad TV? How many jokes have David Letterman and Jay Leno made about President Bush’s latest screw-up or blunder? And how many websites are out there mocking our Commander-In-Chief?

I still remember visiting the White House when I was in Washington with Julie last year and meeting protestors who literally came there to protest every single day. I may be wrong, but I don’t think there has been one President in history who has ever been mocked or protested against this much.

But in less than 24 hours – it will thankfully all be over.

In his farewell address last week, President Bush said the following, “Like all who have held this office before me, I have experienced setbacks. There are things I would do differently if given the chance. Yet I’ve always acted with the best interests of our country in mind. I have followed my conscience and done what I thought was right. You may not agree with some of the tough decisions I have made. But I hope you can agree that I was willing to make the tough decisions.”

So in closing, I will make a statement that is equally as ridiculous as that one. “Some of you may not agree with me that I think George W. Bush is the worst President we have ever had. But I hope you can agree that I was willing to make my opinion known.”

Good Riddance “W” – don’t let the door hit you on the way out.
