A Penny For My Thoughts

My New Year’s Resolution – Accomplish Accomplishments

By Paul Wein

It’s that time of year again, the time where all of us make our New Year’s Resolution(s). Whether you make one or a dozen, they usually involve something you wish to achieve, conquer – or remove from your life entirely. Be it lose weight, get a better job, find your true love – or quit smoking – we all make them. The hard part is not making the Resolution – it is keeping it. I hope to keep mine this year – the question is – will you?

According to Wikipedia, “Recent research shows that while 52% of participants in a New Year’s Resolution study were confident of success with their goals, only 12% actually achieved their goals. Men achieved their goal 22% more often when they engaged in goal setting, a system where small measurable goals are used (lose a pound a week, instead of saying ‘lose weight’), while women succeeded 10% more when they made their goals public and got support from their friends.”

In order to hopefully ensure that I keep my New Year’s Resolution this year, I made sure that it was something that has been gnawing at my ankles for many years. A collection of things that I have vowed to do – but did not because of a variety of stupid excuses. Things that may seem insignificant to everyone – but are very important to me that they be attained.

My New Year’s Resolution – Accomplish Accomplishments.

According to www.dictionary.com, “Accomplish” is defined as, “to bring to its goal or conclusion; carry out; perform; finish; to complete.” And “Accomplishments” are defined as, “an act or instance of carrying into effect; fulfillment; achievement.” So, using and combining those definitions, my New Year’s Resolution is, “to finish and complete fulfillments and achievements.” That said, these are the Accomplishments I wish to Accomplish:

· Fulfill a milestone I have dreamed of since March 12, 1997 – reach 1,000 columns
· I have written 967 columns since my first one, but only 875 are available online – my goal is to finish putting the remaining 92 columns that have not been converted from Word into HTML on my website for all to read.
· My Dad owned a roll top desk that was given to me upon his death. It is in terrible shape – and I want to complete the task of refurbishing my Dad’s old roll top desk to the original wood, make it more sturdy – and shellac it.
· I have visited my Father’s grave a few times since his passing 27 years ago. I plan to carry out the act of visiting my Father’s grave for the first time in many, many years.
· I own four-and-a-half boxes of comic books that date back to my childhood. This year, I want to achieve the task of determining the true worth of my comic book collection – whether I sell them or not.
· My wrestling television show, Ring Fever, has been in limbo for quite some time now. My goal is to carry out the act of making the show my own – and reviving the juggernaut that it was.

I promise everyone who reads this – but more importantly, myself – that I will absolutely stop at nothing to ensure that I Accomplish these Accomplishments. No matter what it takes (determination, encouragement, and perseverance) – and no matter what stands in my way (work, other projects, and life in general) – I vow to make this happen. I know all of us say this on this day – and usually give up a few months if not weeks into the year. But this time – I am going to Accomplish those six Accomplishments…

…even if it is the last thing I do.

I hope that whatever New Year’s Resolution(s) you make come true – and I hope that you are as determined in making them happen as I am.

Good luck! We’re gonna need it!
