Are You And Your Family Prepared, Just In Case?
By Paul Wein
On September 11, 2001, America was attacked by terrorists. Unfortunately, we as a nation were not prepared for what took place that day, because we were under the impression that, "It cant happen here." Since that tragic day, America has made up for its mistake by doing all it can to make sure that if another 9/11 happens this country will be ready.
Are you?
As a former officer with the New York City Office of Emergency Management, I know all too well about being prepared for the worst. Having worked at the OEM Command Center for the first three months following the tragedy, I learned a lot about what to do if there is another attack on America. I also learned how much is being done to educate the population as a whole about what to do and I encourage you to learn as much as you can just in case.
On Monday night, I went to Congregation Beth Sholom to attend a CERT training session. CERT stands for Community Emergency Response Team, which is comprised of citizens just like you and me who, after some training, are able to assist emergency workers in the event of a disaster, be it natural or man made. Whether that assistance be coordinating people and directing them to safe locations, staffing a Point of Distribution for vaccinations, or just helping someone stay calm during a crisis, the role of a citizen volunteer is crucial during such a difficult time.
The Nassau County Office of Emergency Management can tell residents a great deal about what to do in the event of an emergency, and even how they could become a citizen volunteer. I suggest that you contact the OEM office to find out what you need to know. They would be happy to come to an organization and make a presentation about preparedness to a group of 25 or more. If you are someone who would like to learn about preparedness, or a member of an organization that would like to take OEM up on its offer, call them at (516) 573-0636.
Remember, the best weapon against any disaster natural or otherwise is preparedness. Make sure that if something happens, you are ready just in case.
