Come To A Special Event: Jan. 28
By Paul Wein
On Aug., 12, 2003 in the rain-swollen Bouqet River in upstate New York, four boys, Adam Cohen, Jonah Richman Jordan Satin and David Altschuler, lost their lives when Altschuler fell into the water and the three remaining friends dove in to attempt to save their drowning friend.
Although together forever in death, these four boys were best friends in life. Enjoying each other’s friendship and camaraderie both at home in the Five Towns, in Pennsylvania where Altschuler lived, and at Camp Baco, where they were both campers and counselors, they were inseparable, and now share a bond for eternity.
On Sat., Jan. 28, their lives, friendship and memories will be remembered at a fund-raiser, which is being held at the Sands in Atlantic Beach. Beginning at 7:30 p.m., the boys’ loved ones, friends and family will come together to not only honor those they lost, but help kids enjoy the same experiences they did, thanks to the Baco Boys Fund, which has been established in their memory.
The fund, which was created by Allison Satin, sister of the late Jordan Satin, raises money to send children to camp via a paid camp scholarship whose parents are unable to afford to send them on their own. The children selected for this honor will be able to attend summer camp for seven weeks during the summertime, for each remaining summer of their childhood. The reason for this type of scholarship is simple – because if the Baco Boys loved summer camp so much – it is only fitting that they would want to see other children enjoy the same experiences.
The evening’s festivities will not be a somber ceremony, but rather an evening containing a live band, a carnival and an assortment of prizes. According to Satin, this is because the boys would not want an event that is, "boring and serious," but rather a night of fun and laughs.
Last year’s inaugural event raised $125,000, which was enough to send two children to summer camp. This year, the organizers are looking to raise even more, maybe enough to send three kids to camp – and make their lives more exciting – just as the Baco Boys would have wanted.
If you are looking for an enjoyable evening, and a way to make a difference in the lives of young children, I encourage you to attend this event. What better way to remember four innocent young boys then by sending others to an experience that they will never forget. Summer camp is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and the children who benefit from the scholarships will no doubt have as much fun as the Baco Boys did, and maybe form the same life-long bonds.
