A Penny For My Thoughts

Evil People Are No Good

By Paul Wein

All of my life, I have been a good person. I try my best to help everyone I can, I have empathy and compassion toward my fellow man – and I enjoy bringing happiness and joy to others. So considering the fact that I feel this way – I am astounded that there are people in this world that are evil – and that they are able to live their lives that way.

What I mean by evil people are individuals who have absolutely no regard for anyone but themselves, who live their lives as if they are the only person on the planet – and who actually purposely hurt someone else for their own amusement or benefit. Believe it or not, people like this really do exist – and I am flabbergasted by this. Throughout my trip down the road of life, I have encountered many of these evil people, and each time I do – I am even more taken back then I was the last time I met one. Here are just some examples of evil people I have met:

• When I was very young, I went into a video store that I frequented to rent another wrestling tape. After I placed my bicycle on the floor outside the video store, the store’s owner asked me to come to the counter because he wanted to give me something. What he gave me was a program from the very first Wrestlemania. As I was looking at it, I noticed that he gestured with his hand and head to someone outside – who, unbeknownst to me – was stealing my bike thanks to his distraction. When I turned around and saw that my bike was gone, I dropped the program and ran outside – only to see the owner laughing to his friend and giving him a high five.

• My mother worked at Loehmann’s and just finished rearranging the pocketbooks, when a woman walked over and began looking through what my mom had just straightened. As the woman perused the pocketbooks, she began throwing them on the floor and on top of the other merchandise. Bewildered, my mother approached her and explained to the woman that she just finished fixing them. Upon hearing that, the woman turned to my mother and said, “Now you have something to do.”

• When I was a teenager, I was looking for a job, and answered a call from a catering service who was looking for help. After a brief interview, the owner asked me if I would work for a day to, “show him what I can do.” Naively, I agreed and spent an entire day scrubbing industrial size pots. After my free day of labor – I never heard from him again.

• I was in Applebee’s just yesterday, when I went outside for a smoke. When I got back to my seat, my beer and my notepad were shoved over to a different seat. Seeing someone else sitting in my seat, I tapped him on the shoulder and informed him that he was in my seat. Looking at me as if I was wrong, he pointed to an empty seat next to him and said, “So? Go sit there.”

Wow.

Isn’t it incredible that people like this actually exist? I guess I am too nice of a person, because I could never imagine living my life that way, as a selfish, uncaring prick. But I guess I am the minority – because, unfortunately – there are more of them then there are of me…

…and what a shame that is.
