Wasted Time
By Paul Wein
When the devastating attacks of September 11th occurred, New York City – “The City That Never Sleeps” – screeched to an abrupt halt. With half of Manhattan left without electricity, telephones, gas or access – something had to be done immediately to bring the greatest city in the world back to normal. And in only twenty-four hours – that was accomplished. The very next day, the cleanup began, power was restored in some areas – and a fully functioning Command Center was created in an empty pier.
So what happened in the Gulf Coast?
It has now been nine days and six hours since Hurricane Katrina slammed into the states of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, leaving thousands dead, millions homeless – and all three states in ruins. Yet, nearly two weeks later – people are still stranded, toxic flood waters still fill the streets – and people are hungry, sick and dying.
Two disasters, one distinct difference – response time.
I am absolutely appalled that so many people are still without help in the Gulf Coast – and that our corrupt and narcissistic President can say that he is doing all he can. The night that Hurricane Katrina hit land – news footage showed the President playing the guitar at his vacation home in Crawford, Texas. As soon as I saw the footage – I was reminded of when he read My Pet Goat after learning that the Twin Towers had been struck by aircraft. As President, it is his job to spring into action anytime this country is in crisis. Whether this country is hit with a hurricane, a terrorist attack, or a nuclear explosion – he is the one that the country turns to when in need…
…even though he turned his back on us.
I watched him on Labor Day when he went to the effected areas and hugged “refugees” as they are being called. And when I saw him do that – I laughed. I laughed because a hug will not rebuild their home, put food in their stomachs, give them the medical care they need – or help them find their missing relatives. All his hug did was make those who still blindly support him think that he is actually doing something to help these poor people – when in reality – he could care less.
During “The Concert For Hurricane Relief,” Rapper Kanye West shocked the producers of the telethon when he said, on live television, “President Bush doesn’t care about black people.” I say he’s wrong – because President Bush doesn’t care about poor people. Believe me, if a black family had enough money to contribute to his war machine – than he would love them no matter the color of their skin. Think about it, the World Trade Center was filled with prominent people and businesses who controlled many of the world’s financial markets. So it’s no wonder that help arrived so quickly. But when the nation’s worst hurricane wipes out three states in the South full of people who make $10,000 less than the poorest of Americans – and who probably didn’t vote for him anyway – it’s no wonder why aid got their so late.
Once again, President George W. Bush has disgraced himself and our nation by putting his self-righteous agenda ahead of those he was elected to serve. This man is, by far, the worst President we have ever had and should not only be impeached – but hung by his neck on the White House lawn – and removed from our history books so future Americans do not have to know about his eight long years of tyranny.
I wonder how quick the response time would have been if Hurricane Katrina hit Beverly Hills?
