A Penny For My Thoughts

The World Wide Web…Literally

By Paul Wein

There are over ten million websites on the world wide web, ranging from sports, to politics, to religion – to pornography. At anytime, anyone can access anything they want or need from anywhere in the world. But of all the websites on the Information Superhighway – I feel that the one that has more to offer than any of the rest is Craigslist.

Established in 1995 by Craig Newmark, Craigslist is literally a one-stop shopping center for anyone’s needs. Worldwide, but broken down by community, Craigslist makes available, in their own words, “jobs, housing, goods and services, social activities, a girlfriend or boyfriend, advice, community information, and just about anything else – all for free.” Even E-Bay, the world’s most popular and well-known Internet auction house – doesn’t offer what Craigslist does. And while I have perused and used the website on many occasions – it was yesterday that I realized just how powerful the website really is.

Needing some quick cash, I decided to sell my Playstation 2 Game Console along with all the attachments – considering that I have not used it since 2002. So wanting to sell it, I placed a free ad on Craigslist, which simply stated, “Perfectly underused Playstation 2 with Four Game Controllers, Multi-Tap, Extra Power Cord, And The Following Games: Star Wars Rebel Assault (PS1 Game), Smackdown! Shut Your Mouth, Crazy Taxi, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Twisted Metal Black. Cash & Carry, Everything in excellent condition. E-mail me if you are interested!”

I posted the ad at 10:18pm hoping that I would get a quick sale – and that is precisely what I got.

Not even twenty-four hours later, I got an e-mail from someone named “Webb” who wanted to purchase the Playstation. After a few e-mails back and forth – we arranged a meeting place and time – and he got my Playstation – and I got $125 – just like that.

Now that I had such a successful sale in under a day, I plan to sell of a bunch of other useless junk that is doing nothing but collecting dust around my house. I have some bar signs, a box of software games, some electronics – and four boxes of comic books that I have done nothing with but move from place to place with me. But now that I have harnessed the power of Craigslist – I think it is time to convert this untouched treasure into cold hard cash.

For anyone that has never even logged onto Craigslist, I suggest you do. That website can help anyone find anything they need from anywhere in the world at anytime. Whether someone is looking for an old Playstation, a new friend – or a casual encounter – Craigslist is the place to find it.

Thank you Mr. Newmark. Thank you very much,
