Three’s Company
By Paul Wein
They say that when two people are in need of something – they come together at the most perfect time – and thanks to a recent event in my life – I have realized that that statement could not be more true.
As of late, my financial situation has not been the best due to the fact that I have had tremendous difficulty finding a job. This is due to the fact that I am either “overqualified” for whatever position I apply for – or that jobs are paying dirt – as proven in the recent offering by The Brooklyn Star/Queens Ledger, who is seeking a community editor with much experience, but is only willing to pay $19,000 per year. That said, I have had no choice but to, yet again, seek a roommate to help with the monthly expenses of this apartment. At the same time, my friend Diane, who I recently met, was in need of a place to stay due to a recent separation. With both of us needing each other at the exact same time – we decided to move in together and create a mutual partnership – and I can tell you that it is already a great decision just eleven days in.
I love living alone. With the exception of girlfriends, I have lived alone all my life – except once when I had a pair of previous roommates who literally tainted my apartment to the point where I left it after living there for four years – even though the landlord literally offered to lower the rent if I stayed. But necessity always dictates existence – and once again – I had to take on a roommate. But unlike my last pair of roommates, I am very happy to say that the arrangement I have with Diane is wonderful – and I can only see it getting better.
Strictly platonic in nature, my “relationship” with Diane is a great one. When she moved her stuff in on July 2nd, she acclimated perfectly – and the apartment really doesn’t look all that different. And in the less than two weeks that she has been here – she has already added to the apartment immensely, bringing with her many items I very much needed – and giving my place the “woman’s touch” that it desperately needed. And most importantly, Beavis has surprisingly taken to his new roommate and the changes to his “castle” without incident.
While I very much enjoy living with Diane – no one wants to take on a roommate purely because they need to. But I am happy to report that although that was the main reason she moved in here – I, for the first time since I have lived with someone – do not feel as if I have lost my personal space or my independence. She is a good friend who’s company I enjoy. I enjoy spending evenings with her watching television and making dinners – and as we move forward with this arrangement – I can see that it is only going to get better in the long run for myself, her – and of course – Beavis…
…especially considering the fact that she is one hell of a cook.
