It May Be July 7th, But In London Its 9/11
By Paul Wein
At 7:00am this morning, I woke up to a phone call from my mother who told me that there was a series of terrorist attacks in London and that many people were both injured and killed. Hearing that, I immediately turned on my television and realized that her horrifying statement was indeed true.
At 8:51am London time, the first of four blasts occurred in the citys Underground Tube System at the Aldgate station. The second blast occurred at 8:56am at the Russell Square station. Then, a third blast detonated at 9:17am at the Edgeware Road station. After the three blasts in the Tube, at 9:47am, a Double Decker Bus on Liverpool Street was literally ripped apart. In all, over 45 people in total were killed, close to one thousand have been hurt and 150 people are in serious condition following the worst terrorist attack in London since World War II.
As soon as I got wind of the terrorist attacks, the first person I thought of was Arthur. He is my dear friend who I met through the South Park Digest, who happens to live and work in London. Immediately, I prayed that he was nowhere near the four explosions and that he is unharmed. I am sure I speak for all of the members of my South Park family when I say that we are all eagerly awaiting to hear from him so we can all put our fears to rest.
As expected, Al Qaeda has already claimed responsibility for this disgrace. And since these monsters do not commit acts like this without a reason, there could be two either the fact that this week, London was chosen as the host city for the 2012 Olympics or the fact that the G8 Summit is currently taking place in Scotland. Whatever their twisted reasoning no sane human being could justify a reason for killing innocent people.
Following the attacks, both President Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair have left the G8 Summit and are returning to their respective countries. And as I write this, most major U.S. cities have increased security on major rail lines and I am sure that our national terror alert will be raised from yellow to orange. As I did with our emergency workers following 9/11, I have tremendous praise for Englands Emergency Services who responded with expert precision to these attacks to treat the wounded and rescue those who were trapped. No matter the amount of training no one can prepare for an actual attack so I congratulate each and every person who lent a hand to deal with this horrible incident.
Now that London has also suffered from a terrorist attack, I feel it is time that each and every country that wants to live in a world with peace and without terrorism join together and wipe out these bastards. Lets forget about Iraq and concentrate on finding the leaders and members of Al Qaeda as well as Osama Bin Laden who should have been captured a long time ago. If we do not focus our attention in the right place then we will live in a world constantly threatened by terror and every day in the future of our world will be September 11th.
May God Bless the wounded and lost and may God damn those responsible.
