A Penny For My Thoughts

Damn Yankees

By Paul Wein

In 2000, the New York Yankees swept the New York Mets to win the first Subway Series since 1956 – and take their third consecutive World Series championship. But since then – the New York Yankees have been playing the worst baseball in their history – failing to win a World Series in the last five years, losing a record number of games, making an enormous amount of errors – and causing their fans to question what is happening to what is supposed to be the greatest team in baseball.

As I write this, the Yankees are playing the Mets in their second inter-league series match-up this year. In only the top of the sixth inning – the Mets are leading the Yankees by a score of 7-2 – this after winning the series opener yesterday by a score of 6-4. For the Yankees, last night’s loss was their fourth in the last five games and leaves them six games behind the first-place Red Sox – who the Bronx Bombers lost the World Series to last year.

I am a huge Yankee fan, but I have to admit that my patience is starting to wear thin with their performance as a team. Their roster contains some of the sport’s best, their payroll totals more than half of the other teams’ combined – and they have a history behind them that no other team can even try and come close to. Yet, they are playing baseball like they are all in Little League. I have never seen them do so badly so often. They are losing games to teams that they have slaughtered in the past, they are making some really embarrassing errors – and they are once again blowing their chance of even making it to the World Series much less winning it.

Many fans, critics and sports analysts are blaming Manager Joe Torre for how badly the Yankees are doing – and feel that he is not doing enough to figure out what the problem is. I do not have access to the Yankee dugout or locker room and have not attended any Yankees meetings – so it would be foolish of be to blame anyone. I will say, however, that something has to be done to right this very big wrong. Since 2000, the Yankees’ last five seasons have indeed been getting progressively worse – with this year being the worst of them all. So whatever or whoever is to blame – something must be done to return the Yankees to the team that they once were – before every single New Yorker becomes a Mets fan.

Speaking of the Mets, it is currently the top of the seventh inning – and they are now beating the Yankees by a score of 10-2.
