A Penny For My Thoughts

I Love The Night Life

By Paul Wein

Ever since I started bartending at Secrets on May 3rd, I have had to alter my everyday existence to a nocturnal one, which currently finds me wide awake while the whole wide world is fast asleep – and going to bed when the Sun wakes up. Being someone who always preferred night over day – I have discovered that I love the night life rather than a daily existence.

This is not the first graveyard shift I have worked. During my tenure at the Mayor’s Office of Emergency Management immediately following the September 11th atrocity – I worked many an overnight shift – and preferred it then as well. There’s just something about the night that has always enticed me – and now that I have a full time night job – I can actually live the night life I love so much.

I start my shift at 8:00pm and I usually close the bar between 4:00am and 5:00am, which gets me home by 5:30am – and by the time I head to bed – most people are leaving for work. There is something about watching people grab their morning coffee when you are ready for a nightcap – and seeing people race for the morning train while you are ready to call it a night.

There are, however, a few setbacks to my current nocturnal existence. One being the fact that it is very hard to go to bed with the Sun poking through my window. Also, I very rarely sleep, so these last five weeks have found me going to bed at either 5:30am or 6:30am – and waking up at 9:30am or 10:30am. I have to admit that getting only three or four hours of sleep has certainly expanded the length of my day – but it has also taken quite a toll on my body. As of late, I find myself to be lethargic and not exactly in top shape – but I am sure that it is only a matter of time before my body adjusts to its new schedule.

Somehow, my life has always granted me all that I have wished for, and I have always been grateful to God for that. Not only have I been blessed with the opportunity to become a bartender – but I have also been given the chance to actually live a nocturnal life – and I have to admit that while most people exist during the day – I do love the night life over a daily one.
