A Penny For My Thoughts

Deep Throat Has Finally Emerged From Behind The Green Door

By Paul Wein

On Tuesday, the greatest political and journalistic mystery was unveiled when Former FBI Deputy Director W. Mark Felt announced to Vanity Fair Magazine that he in fact was “Deep Throat,” the shadowy government official who helped The Washington Post unravel the cover-up that forced President Richard Nixon’s resignation on August 9, 1974. Shortly after Vanity Fair broke the story, Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, The Washington Post’s Watergate reporting duo, confirmed Felt’s identity on the newspaper’s website.

For over thirty years, these three men were able to keep secret the identity of the man who literally took down a president. In a world where celebrities and newsmakers can’t go to the bathroom without being photographed, filmed or followed – it blows my mind that the identity of “Deep Throat” was able to be kept secret for so long. Woodward and Bernstein vowed to keep Felt’s identity a secret and not reveal who he was until after his death, but Felt, who is now 91 and living with his daughter in Santa Rosa, California, decided that it was time for him to go public with the shocking news.

Now, the question surrounding “Deep Throat” is whether he is an American hero or a traitor – I say he was a hero.

On the night of June 17, 1972, five burglars broke into the Democratic National Committee offices in the Watergate office complex in Washington, and not only was President Nixon involved in the burglary – but he tried to cover up the fact that he and White House staff were involved in planning the break-in. Nixon also tried to keep Oval Office audiotapes from special prosecutor Leon Jaworski which would prove Nixon was personally involved in the payment of hush money to the five burglars. So the fact that Felt told Woodward and Bernstein that Nixon was a thief and a liar makes him a hero. What American – besides the 59,054,087 people who voted for George W. Bush – would want a president to lead their country that uses deception and trickery to get into office? So I commend W. Mark Felt for his honesty, as well as the tremendous risks he took in blowing the Watergate whistle.

So now that the identity of the world’s most infamous informant is known, the media will surely drain every drop of blood they can from a story they have been dying to report on for the last three decades. Already, publishers are lining up to ink Felt for a book deal, television stations are foaming at the mouth to have him on for an interview – and newspapers will no doubt make the words, “Deep Throat” a part of their headlines for as long as they can. So we can all look forward to getting to know everything we didn’t want to know about Watergate, “Deep Throat,” Woodward and Bernstein – and Former President Nixon – until we gag.

Ok, so where’s Jimmy Hoffa?

“In Birmingham they love the governor.
Now we all did what we could do.
Now Watergate does not bother me.
Does your conscience bother you?
Tell the truth.”
