A Penny For My Thoughts

They’re Getting Married – And I’m Nervous

By Paul Wein

In a little less than seven hours, my neighbors and dear friends John Inciarrano and Michelle Bailyn will become man and wife – and while they are calm and ready – I am the one that is nervous.

Besides my own wedding ten years ago, this is the first wedding I have ever been actively involved in. Since I work from home, I have been spending the last week helping Michelle prepare most of the wedding incidentals, including making the favors, picking up last minute necessities – and making sure both of them remain sane. To be honest, I have really enjoyed being so involved in their wedding, which will take place tonight at the Baron De Kalb Knights of Columbus in Sheepshead Bay.

The last wedding I attended was Doug’s on September 24, 2000. I can remember that day like it was yesterday. Although I was in their wedding party, I was not as involved in helping them prepare for their big day as I am with Woody and Michelle. But considering that I am Woody’s co-Best Man and neighbor, it is my pleasure to help in any way I can.

Last night, Woody stayed over my house, because tradition dictates that the bride and groom cannot see each other the day of their wedding. And so far today, both myself and Maureen, Michelle’s bridesmaid, have been going from one apartment to another to help them get ready – while making sure that we keep the bride and groom apart. As members of the bridal party, it is our “job” to be there for them and help them with their every need. From helping them get dressed, to setting up the catering hall – to handing them the rings that will bind their love forever – myself, Maureen and Kyle, my co-Best Man – have done and will continue to do all we can to make this the best day of Woody and Michelle’s lives.

As we get closer and closer to the big moment, my nervousness grows, as does my excitement. I have known Woody for nine years and Michelle since they began dating three years ago. I find both of them to be really wonderful people – but I also find their love for each other to be truly unique. They make a great team and have an affection for each other that runs very deep. I am truly honored to be their friend and neighbor – and even more honored to stand with them as they pledge their love for each other – and become husband and wife.

As of now, all that is left is to head to the Hall, get in my tuxedo – and watch them take their vows.

I can’t wait.
