O.J. Simpson – Outrageous Justice, Seriously.
By Paul Wein
On June 12, 1994, police were called to the home of Nicole Brown Simpson in Brentwood, California where she and friend Ronald Goldman were found stabbed to death in the front courtyard. On a business trip in Chicago, Nicole’s husband, O.J. Simpson, was notified of the murders the next day and immediately returned to Los Angeles – where he was temporarily handcuffed, questioned and released. After an investigation determined that there was enough evidence to arrest Simpson for the two murders a few days later – he fled from Lawyer Robert Kardashian’s home to avoid arrest in his now infamous white Ford Bronco driven by A.C. Cowlings on June 17, 1994. After the “slow speed chase” ended at his home in Rockingham, California – he was taken into custody – where it was discovered that he was carrying $25,000 cash and his passport.
After the most famous trial in history, which lasted from January 24th to October 3rd 1995, Simpson was found not guilty for murder in a verdict that literally stopped the world. Even I was in a room full of my co-workers when the verdict was read live on each and every channel – with over 95 million people watching along with me worldwide.
And now, just one week away from the ten-year anniversary of the brutal double murders, O.J. Simpson talked to Katie Couric about what happened that fateful night – and whatever he said doesn’t matter – because no matter what he says, he will never say the only three words that will ever restore his credibility, give him a chance to “work in this town again” – and allow two souls to finally rest in peace…
…“I did it.”
It has been ten years since the woman that O.J. Simpson pledged his hand in marriage to and an innocent man were slaughtered in cold blood – with all of the evidence pointing to Simpson. From the glove, to the blood in his car that matched Nicole Simpson’s DNA, to the Bruno Vitale shoes – to the 911 call that heard O.J. verbally threatening Nicole – the Prosecution had a slam-dunk case – but instead lost the historic trial when Simpson, the only suspect in the double murder – was acquitted on both counts.
In my all-to-obvious opinion, the Trial of O.J. Simpson was the biggest perversion of our country’s due process since the commencement of the very first trial in United States history. The State had more than enough evidence to convict Simpson – especially since thousands of criminals have been convicted for less. But due to media coverage that reached levels not even exceeded during the September 11th attacks, impossible odds at sequestering the jury – and the ever-present “race” card – the verdict that shocked the world was read aloud – and those two words split communities across this country along racial lines. Whites called O.J. Simpson a murderer, and African-Americans called Mark Fuhrman “Hitler.” Protests and rallies were held calling for both sympathy for Simpson – as well as his execution. And each and ever person on this planet formed an opinion as to Simpson’s guilt or innocence…
…I did too – and that opinion is that he is guilty as sin.
Short of “finding the real killer” – nothing will convince me that Simpson is innocent. As I wrote in a column I called, “Great Scott, How Could You?” – referring to Scott Peterson, who is ironically also a suspect in the double murder of his wife, Laci Peterson and their unborn son, Connor, I wrote, “If during the investigation, I was ever considered a suspect in the murder of my wife – I would offer the prosecution anything they wanted to prove my innocence – from a blood sample, to a polygraph test – to hours of voluntary interrogation, even without an attorney.” So I say again, if O.J. was innocent, why did he not make himself available for any testing the prosecution required? He still claims to this day – ten years later – that he didn’t do it – so why not take a lie detector test now? After all, even if he failed the test – he does not have to worry about going to jail – thanks to Double Jeopardy. So why not?
I know why – and so do you.
It is the same reason that O.J. Simpson has not been able to make a cent in Hollywood since the murders. The same reason why he has been blacklisted, shunned, forced to move from communities that have protested his residency, publicly admonished – and ignored by all media except the bird-lining tabloids that follow him around like the Jimi Hendrix of Page Six…
…because everyone knows that he did it.
I could never, ever contemplate the idea of taking another human life, even if it was in self-defense. Much less the idea of carrying around the fact that I got away with murder. If I was in O.J.’s “shoes,” I would not be able to sleep, go out in public – or look into the eyes of the children I fathered with the woman I murdered.
But O.J. can – because he’s “innocent.”
