The One Thing The PDB Did Reveal Is That The President Did Bupkes
By Paul Wein
As part of the fallout of the testimony of White House National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice before the 9/11 Commission, the White House released, under intense political pressure, a confidential document on April 10th called a Presidential Daily Briefing, or PDB. The document was given to the President that morning at his request to learn what, if anything, the FBI was doing to track Osama Bin Laden and his Al-Qaeda network. In the 475-word briefing, which is called, "Bin Laden Determined To Strike In U.S.," the FBI stated - in the very first paragraph - that, "[Osama] Bin Laden, since 1997, has wanted to conduct terrorist attacks in the U.S." If that is not eye-opening enough, the memo in general contained the following words and phrases:
Bin Laden...terrorist attacks...America...World Trade Center...Washington...he prepares operations years in advance...wanted to hijack U.S. aircraft...patterns of suspicious activity in this country consistent with preparations for hijackings...
This document was given to the President on August 6, 2001 - 37 days before the September 11th attacks.
After a meeting this morning with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, President Bush said, of the memo, that, "There was nothing in this report to me that said, 'Oh, by the way, we've got intelligence that says something is about to happen in America.'"
Are you kidding me?
The only thing that memo was missing were the flight numbers of the airplanes used to carry out the attacks. That memo basically said, in not so many words, that Osama Bin Laden was definitely going to attack America in some form or another. It also gave hints as to two of his potential targets - the World Trade Center and Washington. And it also gave clear indication as to how he would carry out the attacks - by using hijacked aircrafts as weapons.
If I was the President and I read this memo, do you know what it would say to me? It would say, "Oh, by the way, we've got intelligence that says something is about to happen in America." The contents of that memo would also make me, as President, order air patrols over Manhattan and Washington D.C. and tighten security in all airports across the country. Those actions prior to September 11th could have, quite possibly, downplayed or even completely prevented the attacks of September 11th.
But instead, George W. Bush read the PDB - and the President Did Bupkes.
Right now, I feel like a wife who believed her husband when he said he did not cheat on her - only to see a video of him having sex with another woman. I feel shocked, stunned, manipulated - and betrayed. I feel that President Bush had a crystal ball in the form of this document one month and seven days prior to the day that changed the world and chose to ignore it instead of act on it. I feel like President Bush had the one thing that I would have done anything for prior to September 11th - a heads up - and chose inaction instead of pro-action. I feel that the briefing, which President Bush called, "kind of a history of Osama Bin Laden's intentions" was indeed a listing of Bin Laden's intentions - his future intentions - and was, in fact, a blueprint for the worst atrocity to ever take place in human history...
...a blueprint that the President blatantly ignored.
Now if you will excuse me, I am going to visit John Kerry's website - and so should you.
