A Penny For My Thoughts

Oh, Just Leave 'Em Alone!

By Paul Wein

At least once a week, we humans as a society present more evidence to show just how hypocritical we are. This week's proof, at least in my view - is the issue of Gay and Lesbian Marriage Licenses.

On February 12th, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom began issuing marriage licenses to Gay and Lesbian couples, allowing, for the first time, legally recognized marriages of same-sex couples in the state of California. While this sparked enthusiastic celebrations by gay couples, who have lined up by the thousands at the City Clerk's Office to apply for Marriage Licenses - it also sparked outrage by not only anti-gay groups, who have staged almost around-the-clock protests at City Hall - but also by some of California's other elected officials - including newly elected Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, who plan to sue the City of San Francisco to stop the issuance of these licenses. In an interview with Meet The Press, "The Governator" said, of Mayor Newsom's issuance of Gay Marriage Licenses, "We have to stay within the law. Maybe the next thing is another city that hands out licenses for assault weapons and someone else hands out licenses for selling drugs, I mean you can't do that."

Although I may be straight, and despite the fact that my life will not be effected if every state in the Union issues Gay Marriage Licenses or not - I say leave them alone and let them get married just like anyone else.

While California is at war because of the issuance of Gay Marriage Licenses, while people are staging protests and getting arrested - and while the future partnership of thousands of "just married" homosexual couples hang in the balance - America once again shows the world its hypocrisy. I say hypocrisy because if it is not "moral" and "in the eyes of God" to issue marriage licenses to gay couples, than why is it "ok" to put shows like Will & Grace, Queer Eye For The Straight Guy and The 'L' Word on primetime network and cable television? Why are magazines like Out, Advocate and Girlfriends not protested? And why can we fold the homosexual "lifestyle" into mainstream America to the point where guys are being accused of being "Metrosexuals" - but refuse to allow homosexuals the same rights as "straight America?"

To me, this country denying homosexuals the right to marry is the same thing as when America denied women the right to vote - or when African-Americans were considered "second-class citizens". At the time of the Suffrage and Civil Rights movements, America had to realize that our society - our "human" race - was evolving. We had no choice but to come to the conclusion that whether we like it or not, women, African-Americans - and now homosexuals - are just as much a part of society as anyone else. And if they are allowed to work in "our" cities, live in "our" communities, and entertain us through "our" televisions - then they should be allowed to marry in the eyes of "our" law...

...unless America would like to keep up its hypocrisy quota.

"I don't care what they think.
I don't care what they say.
What do they know about this love anyway?"
